‘Out of the Shadows’ – The transition from darkness to light takes us from the intense expressions of the murderous composer Prince Carlo Gesualdo and the tortuous chromaticism of Lassus’ Sibylline Prophecies to the searingly beautiful harmonies of 21st-century MacMillan and radiant compositions by William Byrd. The programme includes American ‘shape note’ singing, a stark and wonderfully anachronistic style preserved nearly intact from early settlers and not often heard outside of the puritanical traditions of the deep south
